After School Social Studies Group
I had the opportunity to participate in the after school social studies program at Lincoln Elementary. Through this program four fourth graders were taught different standards by me. I decided that we were going to focus on economics. Using the Michigan standards, my four students learned the difference between local and government agencies, different money saving strategies and about banks, as well as starting a business. My students that I had loved creating their own business. They collaborated together to figure out what the product was that they wanted to sell. From that list they picked one that they thought would produce the most profit. Then they thought about what materials they would need, where they would sell their product, and who their target audience was. From there the idea sparked and set off. They were creating different advertisements, slogans, even adding a mascot for their company, "Super Bands."
Language Arts Activities
Throughout my time at Adrian College I have had a lot of experience in working one on one with students on Language Arts. This mainly consisted of working on reading and writing skills. Pictured below are two activities that I completed with students.
For the students that don't necessarily like writing, I used this process to make it a bit more fun. After reading a story on Mozart, this third grade student created a comic book version of it. This meant that she had to recall and use her resources to remember what happened, and then transfer that into the most important parts to show in the comic book. She was so excited to complete this, that even though she didn't have to take it home to finish because we could have done it on the next time we met, she wanted to work on it at home.
